What are Sleep Apnea Devices?

Our dentists at at Manor Park Dental often recommend sleep apnea devices (also referred to as oral appliances) for patients experiencing mild to moderate sleep apnea.

The devices can be extremely effective at eliminating snoring and treating this serious medical condition. Many patients also find them comfortable to wear. For severe cases of sleep apnea, there is the CPAP (Continuous Positive Air Pressure Machine).

All of these devices work to help you breathe better while you sleep - and get a more restful night's slumber without your sleep cycle being disrupted.

Our dentists can help you find the right sleep apnea device for you.

Why should I use a sleep apnea device?

Sleep apnea devices may help to treat sleep apnea and potentially eliminate or greatly reduce symptoms of this serious medical condition, such as snoring and pauses in breathing while asleep. They are most effective for patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea.

How do sleep apnea devices work?

For patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea, using an oral appliance may be effective in treating the condition. These devices must be fitted by a dentist. Two of the most popular are:

  • Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD)

Most commonly used for sleep apnea, the MAD device looks similar to a mouthguard. They snap over your upper and lower dental arches. Metal hinges allow the jaw to be moved forward. Some let you control the degree to which your jaw advances.

  • Tongue Retaining Device

Used less often than MADs, this device holds the tongue in place with a splint to keep the airway open.

These devices can be custom-fit to offer the best possible comfort. For patients with severe sleep apnea, we can recommend a CPAP device or other treatment such as surgery to help with symptoms.

Benefits of Using Sleep Apnea Devices

For patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea, using an oral appliance to treat symptoms offers several benefits. They can:

  • Keep your airway open while improving sleep quality
  • Relieve daytime sleepiness and headaches
  • Effectively eliminate obstructive sleep apnea and snoring for patients with mild to moderate conditions

Patients with severe sleep apnea may find the CPAP device or other treatment may be more effective in treating symptoms. For more information about how CPAP devices can help, contact us.
